Camille Lévêque (1985, Paris) est une artiste visuelle dont la pratique mélange photographie,collage, travail textile, vidéo 
et installation. 
Tout en développant continuellement sa pratique, elle explore essentiellement la de notion mémoire, identités et intimité, mettant la famille comme pierre angulaire de son analyse.


Travaillant essentiellement autour de l’archive, à la fois en re-contextualisation et décontextualisation, elle aspire à illustrer l’idée de mémoire, son impact sur le présent et le futur, ses limites et son effacement, ainsi que les distorsions de perception liées au passage du temps. 

Fortement intéressée par la notion de mythologie familiale, sa recherche part 
d’une perspective individuelle pour se confronter 
à un champ collectif, construisant ainsi une conversation autour de l’importance de la mémoire dans l’histoire héréditaire et notre relation à la réalité. 


L’objet photographique devient une excuse pour questionner notre capacité à échanger, percevoir et documenter la vérité, ou au contraire, la déformer à notre avantage et nous réinventer. En poussant les limites de médium, elle joue d’une certaine façon avec le passé, à la recherche d’une nouvelle approche de l’autobiographie que ce soit à l’échelle individuelle ou collective.


Depuis 2014, elle expérimente autour des notions d’anonymat, autorat et identité à travers le collectif LIVE WILD par lequel elle travaille sous sept différents noms, le sien et six alias. Par les différents travaux et alias construits elle questionne l’importance du personnage de l’artiste dans le développement de sa pratique et sa carrière. 


Elle a travaillé en tant que reporter pour l’UNHCR en Arménie et assistante éditoriale pour Magnum Photos à Paris pour ensuite se concentrer sur sa pratique de photographe. Elle est la fondatrice du collectif LIVE WILD et co-fondatrice de la maison d’édition ORPHEUS STANDING ALONE.


Son travail a été récompensé à de nombreuses reprises, notamment par le soutien à la création de la DRAC Île-de-France (2025), la Fondation Gulbenkian (2025), le Fonds de recherche ADAGP (2024), ainsi que le PhMuseum Grant (3e prix, 2023) ou le Prix Picto / 19M (2020). 
Elle a également été nominée pour des distinctions internationales telles que le Paul Huf Award ou le Shpilman Prize.


Son œuvre a été présentée dans des institutions et festivals majeurs, parmi lesquels Les Rencontres d’Arles (Paris), La Galerie du Jour (Paris), Benaki Museum (Athènes), UNSEEN (Amsterdam), Aperture Foundation (NY), York National Gallery (York), La Fondation Fiminco (Romainville) ou encore le MACRO (Rome). 
Elle a bénéficié de résidences artistiques telles que ECPAD x ADAGP (Ivry, 2024) ou SPBH x MEP (Paris, 2022).


Ses projets font partie de collections publiques prestigieuses telles que FRAC Meca, Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Les Rencontres d’Arles, Collection départementale d'art contemporain de Saint Denis, Fondazione Orestiadi ou encore Winterthur Photo Museum.


Elle est l’autrice de plusieurs ouvrages dont À la recherche du Père (Delpire &#38;amp; Co, 2025) et Voir l’exil, penser la mémoire (ECPAD, 2025). 
Son travail a été largement relayé dans la presse nationale et internationale (Libération, Le Monde, British Journal of Photography, Vogue, Télérama, Foam, Internazionale, El Pais, Dazed and Confused...).
 Elle est régulièrement invitée à donner des conférences, workshops et masterclasses autour de la photographie et de la composition de narrations visuelles en strates.

-Camille Lévêque (b.1985, Paris) is a visual artist whose practice involves photography, collage, textile work, video and installation.While constantly developing her practice, she builds layered visual narratives blending documentary work with an artistic and personal approach. 

Her work explores the notions of memory, identity and origins, making the family a cornerstone of her analysis. Essentially working on the recontextualization and decontextualization of archives, she strives to illustrate the idea of memory, its impact on the present and future, its boundaries and erasure, as well as distortions of perception linked to the passing of time. 

Having a strong interest in the notion of family mythology, her research starts from an individual perspective in order to confront a collective field, thus building a conversation around the importance of memory in hereditary history and in our relationship with reality.The photographic object becomes an excuse to question our ability to exchange, perceive and document truth, or, conversely, to distort it to our advantage and reinvent ourselves.

By pushing the boundaries of the medium, she plays with the past in a way, trying to find a new approach to autobiography, whether at the individual or collective scale.

Since 2014, she has been experimenting with notions of anonymity, authorship and identity through the LIVE WILD collective, 
in which she works under seven different names—her own and six aliases. Through different constructed works and aliases, she questions the importance of 
the figure of the artist in the development 
of their practice and career.

She has been working as a reporter for the UNHCR in Armenia and an editorial assistant for Magnum Photos in Paris to then focus on her practice as a photographer. 
She is the founder of the LIVE WILD collective and co-founder of the publishing house ORPHEUS STANDING ALONE.


Her work has been recognized on numerous occasions, including support for creation from the DRAC Île-de-France (2025), the Gulbenkian Foundation (2025), the ADAGP Research Fund (2024), as well as the PhMuseum Grant (3rd Prize, 2023) and the Picto / 19M Award (2020). 


She has also been nominated for major international distinctions such as the Paul Huf Award and the Shpilman Prize.


Her work has been exhibited at institutions and festivals including Les Rencontres d’Arles (Paris), La Galerie du Jour (Paris),

If you take away our pain, what is left of us?

La génération d’Arméniens dont je fais partie, née en France, petits-enfants des survivants du génocide de 1915, s’est construite en deux pôles extrêmes autour 
de son héritage: l’adoration et le rejet. 
Bien qu’aux opposés, ces deux réactions sont pareillement passionnelles et nourries par le fantasme et la douleur. Faire partie de la diaspora arménienne signifie porter un poids inimaginable, exacerbé par l’absence de reconnaissance du Génocide arménien par le gouvernement Turc, ce qui empêche une communauté entière de faire son deuil et tourner la page.
Au fil de mes aller-retours entre l’Arménie 
et la France et de mes conversations, j’ai discerné des angoisses récurrentes, des frustrations ou des envies, qui étaient communes aux jeunes avec qui je m’entretenais et ai commencé à partager mes questionnements:
Comment représenter notre identité, individuelle et collective?
Si la Turquie venait à reconnaitre le génocide de 1915, cela changerait-il drastiquement notre relation à notre histoire et notre mémoire? La notion de trauma est-elle héréditaire?
Avec la reprise de la guerre en septembre 2020, peut-on envisager un futur sans récurrence historique et envisager notre identité sans crainte de persécutions?Quelle est la part de fantasme et de fiction dans les histoires racontées de générations en générations et distordues par le fil du temps et comment sortir du carcan des représentations de soi que notre communauté nous impose? Et au-delà du cas arméno-turc, cette recherche fait-elle écho à d’autres diasporas récentes ou anciennes sur le continent européen, qui touchent de nombreux individus d’origines très diverses : comment articuler son histoire avec d’autres histoires, s’entre-raconter pour faire œuvre commune, communicable et dans laquelle d’autres pourraient se reconnaître? 
M’appropriant des fragments d’histoires, 
je m’essaie à rendre visible les strates historiques, les échanges intergénérationnels et les changements de décors liés à la migration, comme pour établir une impossible archéologie de l’identité.
 Avec comme point de départ l’arbre généalogique comme cartographie friable 
je cherche à réinventer l’histoire familiale dans une narration spéculative. 
La notion de mythologie individuelle permet d’articuler cet album d’un nouveau genre à la forme mouvante.
Par le prisme du lien maternel qui permet 
le voyage de ces origines dans mon histoire familiale, je questionne l’imaginaire épigénétique dans la transmission du trauma et cherche à établir ou écarter des constantes dans les schémas de transmissions culturelles au sein de la famille. Réductionnisme causal, ou marquage traumatique intergénérationnel réel, je questionne la transmission généalogique avec un axe sociologique prononcé dans la façon d’angler mes recherches, puis la forme que prennent mes travaux. 
Dans une volonté de développer une pratique déjà bien amorcée autour de la représentation de la mémoire, de la diaspora et la transmission de ses histoires, je présente ce travail multimédia de recherche autour de la notion d’identité(s) pour les descendants d’immigrants. Ces notions loin d’être figées sont en construction et déconstruction permanentes, et questionnent la manière même dont nous choisissons de nous représenter et de donner forme aux choix que nous faisons pour nous inscrire dans la continuité de notre histoire, ou au contraire faire une rupture avec son passé. 
Par l’usage d’archive, la photographie de studio, et la recomposition des récits d’amis, je cherche à m’émanciper de l’usage traditionnellement documentaire de la photographie.A l’inverse de figer la vérité, j’envisage l’utilisation de la photographie comme une construction de narration personnelle, faite d’images évocatrices. Mettant en exergue les yeux - ou leur absence- je mets la vision, la perception et le regard à la place centrale de mon récit. Fermés, ils révèlent un autre point de vue sur le récit partagé, maintenant fait de réminiscence et de fantasme. 

La réalité étant toujours plus complexe que sa représentation, je dessine ici les prémices d’un décor approximatif, fait de souvenirs et de rêves, dans lequel des expériences autres que la mienne viendront se confronter, se contredire ou conforter, et tenter de comprendre si nous sommes définis par notre histoire ou si nous la définissons.
 Dans un aller-retour entre passé et présent mais aussi entre réalité et fiction, j’aspire à représenter l’identité plurielle des enfants de la diaspora, qui portent en eux une mémoire faite d’images en négociation permanente. 


‘Tsavt Tanem’ est un dicton répandu en Arménie dont la traduction littéral est ‘Je prends ta douleur’, il est employé de façon courante lors de divers échanges pour signifier sa compréhension ou son empathie

The generation of Armenians to which I belong—born in France, grandchildren of survivors of the 1915 genocide—has established two extreme poles based on its heritage: adoration and rejection. Though opposites, these two reactions are similarly passionate and inspired by fantasy and pain. Belonging to the Armenian diaspora means carrying the weight of the past, made heavier by the Turkish government’s failure to recognize the Armenian genocide. This prevents the whole community from mourning and turning the page.

In the course of my trips between Armenia and France, and during my conversations, 
I have noticed fears that recur, frustrations 
or desires that are common among the young people with whom I have spoken 
and begun to share my questions:

How do we represent our individual and collective identity?

If Turkey could bring itself to recognize the 1915 genocide, would that drastically change our relationship with our history and memory? Is the notion of trauma hereditary?

With the resumption of war in September 2020, can we envisage a future without historical recurrence and imagine our identity without fear of persecution?

How much fantasy and fiction is there in stories recounted from generation to generation and distorted over time, and how does one break out of the self-representations with which our community shackles us? And beyond the Armenia-Turkey case, does this research echo other recent or old diasporas on the European continent, which include many individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds? How can one’s own story be connected with other stories? How can they be inter-recounted to create a common, communicable work in which others could recognize themselves?

Taking as a point of departure the genealogical tree as crumbly map, my aim is to reinvent family history in a speculative narrative. The notion of individual mythology makes it possible to articulate this new kind of album, which has a fluid form.

Through the prism of the maternal link, which makes possible the journey from these origins into my family history, I examine the epigenetic imagination in the transmission of trauma, and seek to establish or dismiss constants in cultural transmission patterns within the family. Whether casual reductionism, or real intergenerational traumatic marking, I question genealogical transmission, taking 
a distinctly sociological approach in my way of angling my research, and in the form my works assume.

Wishing to develop a practice I have already initiated, revolving around memory representation, the diaspora, and the transmission of these stories, I am presenting this protean research into the notion of identity (or identities) for immigrant descendants.

Using archives, studio photography, and the reconstruction of friends’ stories, I seek to free myself from the traditional documentary use of photography. Instead of capturing truth, I view the use of photography as the construction of personal narratives made of evocative images. 
Emphasizing eyes (or their absence), I place vision, perception and perspective at the center my story. Closed, they reveal another point of view on the shared story, now made up of reminiscences and fantasy.

Reality always being more complex than its representation, here I sketch the beginnings of an approximate scenery, made up of memories and dreams, in which experiences other than my own confront each other, contradicting or reaffirming each other, and attempt to understand whether it is our history that defines us, or we who define it.

Going back and forth between past and present, reality and fiction, I strive to represent the plural identity of children of the diaspora, who carry within themselves a memory made up of constantly negotiated images. 


‘Tsavt Tanem’ is a popular expression in Armenia that literally translates as “I take away your pain”. It is commonly used in various contexts to indicate understanding or empathy.

Vues d’exposition_Duo showCamille Lévêque &#38;amp; Lucie Khahoutian-
Orchestrant une discussion à deux voix, Camille Lévêque et Lucie Khahoutian racontent, échangent et déconstruisent leur rapport à l'Arménie et à la mémoire. 
La première, française d'origine arménienne, la seconde, arménienne exilée en France, confrontent leur histoire et la manière dont le temps déforme leurs souvenirs, transformant leur expérience en récits romancés.

Sous la forme d'un diptyque complémentaire, cette conversation met en lumière la relation mélancolique d'une communauté avec son héritage et la communication parfois difficile entre les Arméniens et leur diaspora. A l'instar d'une conversation entre l'Arménien oriental et occidental, nous sommes ici face à un dialogue laissant - délibérément - place à l'imprécision, à la réécriture et à l'interprétation subjective de notions collectives.

Entre recherche identitaire et désir d'élargir le champ lexical pour raconter l'histoire de leur patrimoine, l'échange confronte archives, collages, photographies et vidéos, réalisés par les deux artistes au cours des dernières années, et engage un va-et-vient récurrent entre passé, présent et futur, mais aussi, entre réalité et fiction. 

Du contenu à la forme, l'histoire racontée 
ici suit la trace du temps, son impact sur la mémoire, et par conséquent, sur la vérité.En fouillant le récit, des incohérences apparaissent, l’exactitude se fragilise, nous n'assistons pas à une discussion mais à un monologue.

Camille Lévêque est en fait le seul maître de l'opération, attribuant à son alias Lucie Khahoutian - en réalité sa grand-mère - une voix plus légère que la sienne. 

Travaillant sur une approche plus investigatrice et inquisitrice, Lévêque utilise principalement les archives familiales et les nouvelles technologies pour trouver des réponses à des questions non résolues, tandis que Khahoutian répond avec une imagerie plus joyeuse, presque kitsch, remplie de références à son héritage culturel et un ton ludique dans son approche. D'abord presque contradictoires - comme des personnes de générations différentes - les différents visuels résonnent et se répondent, si ce n'est dans le style, par leur signification et leur besoin mutuel de révéler un fardeau collectif : la souffrance d'une communauté dont le génocide (en 1915) n'est toujours pas reconnu par le gouvernement Turc. 

Ce dialogue interne, mis en scène et développé comme une conversation imaginaire entre plusieurs générations 
d'une même famille, illustre alors pleinement la construction d'une identité en strates, et le désir d'un nouveau champ lexical pour raconter l’Arménité.

Orchestrating a conversation between two voices, Camille Lévêque and Lucie Khahoutian narrate, exchange and dismantle their relationship to Armenia and memory.The former, French of Armenian descent, the latter, Armenian immigrant in France, they confront their stories and the way time distorts their memories, transforming their experience into romanticized tales.
In the shape of a diptych, this conversation highlights the melancholic nature of the relationship between a community and its heritage, mirroring a sometimes chaotic communication between Armenians and the diaspora. Akin to a conversation between oriental and occidental Armenian, we’re looking at a dialogue deliberately leaving room for inaccuracy, rewriting, and a subjective interpretation of collective notions.Balancing somewhere in-between identity investigation and desire to widen the vocabulary of heritage, the exchange confronts archive, collage, photography, 
and video, made by both artists over the past few years, and engages in back and forth motions between the past, present, and future, but also between reality and fiction.From the content to the form, the story told here follows the track of time, its impact on memory, and on truth.By rummaging through the story, inconsistency appears, accuracy weakens: this isn’t, in fact, a discussion but a monologue.Camille Lévêque is the sole master of the operation here, allowing her alias Lucie Khahoutian - her grandmother in real life - 
a voice more light-hearted than her own.
Working on an investigative and inquisitive approach, Lévêque uses family archive and new technology to find answers to unresolved issues, while Khahoutian answers with a more joyful, kitsch-like imagery, filled with playful references to her cultural heritage.
At first resembling conflict - as it might happen when different generations interact - the visuals eventually resonate and answer each other by their fundamental meaning an urge to get rid of an overdue burden: the suffering of a community whose genocide (1915) is yet to be recognized by the Turkish government.
This internal dialogue, staged and developed as an imaginary conversation among several generations of the same family, illustrates the construction of a 
multi-layered identity, and the desire for a new semantic field to recount Armenity.</description>

Universal truth est une recherche à travers des milliers de photos de famille, s’étendant sur plusieurs décennies et plusieurs continents. De cette collection de moments intimes immortalisés sur papier, j’isole des résonances évidentes entre ces différentes vies et confronte les postures, célébrations, ou loisirs. Les plus grand moments de fierté sont immortalisés au même niveau que les moments les plus banals du quotidien et figés sur papier pour toujours. Ces moments, souvenirs, survivront leur auteurs et leur protagonistes. On peut sans mal se figurer le nombre incalculable d’albums de famille identiques qui existent partout dans le monde et à quel point ces vies se répondent. Comme si nous étions tous la même personne, partageant la même histoire, et ne voulant qu’une chose simple et universelle : le bonheur entouré de nos proches.
 Depuis l’apparition de la photographie, et avant ça avec la peinture, les familles du monde entier choisissent de documenter leur vie et leur temps passé ensemble, transformant l’album de famille en relique sacrée, portant l’histoire de la famille et avec elle, son passé. Il est intéressant de noter que souvent, si ce n’est exclusivement, seuls les moments heureux sont choisis pour être immortalisés et montrés. Il est rare de trouverdocumentation familiale d’un décès, divorce, ou conflit, éléments pourtant fréquents dans toute vie de famille. Avec cette documentation détaillée j’aspire à trouver des éléments d’unité, des concomitances évidentes. Devant tant de récurrences, la question de la spontanéité de notre usage de la photographie se pose. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un systématisme dans notre manière de photographier et on peut se demander si nous documentons nos vies pour nous même ou pour les autres. Les exactes mêmes poses, décors, évènements se retrouvent inlassablement, questionnant la mise en scène de nos vies et l’authenticité de notre démarche. Sur une échelle mondiale, ces dernières années semblent nous écarter de plus en plus les uns des autres et nous semblons plus divisés que jamais malgré d’énormes efforts technologique pour nous rapprocher. 

Avec des frontières en affirmation et dans un contexte global de chaos identitaire et de division sociale, il est plus important que jamais de nous accrocher aux choses nous rassemblant plutôt que celles qui nous divisent. Ces images, assemblées les unes aux autres, mélangent des familles qui ne se sont jamais rencontrées, et que tout sépare. Ce puzzle quelque peu chaotique, révèle leurs similarités et derrière cet amalgame aux finitions grossières, apparait l’histoire timide d’un lien universel.

Universal truth is a visual research through thousand of family photos, spreading from five decades and three continents.With this fragmented collection of intimate moments, chosen by the family to be remembered, I isolate obvious resonances 
in people lives and confront their posture, gatherings, hobbies or daily lives.Great moments of pride and random occasions are celebrated on the same level and chosen to be frozen in time and exist forever on paper.One can easily notice the countless amount of similar family photos existing worldwide and how strongly they can relate to one another. As if we were all the same person,sharing the same story, wanting the same simple things in life : happiness surrounded by our loved ones.Since the apparition of the medium of photography - and before that with painting - families from all over the globe choose to document their life and their time together and the family photo album often becomes 
a holy relic, carrying the family history and with it, its past.
It is interesting to note that mostly, if not only, happy moments are chosen to be physically remembered and shown. It is indeed rather rare to have visual documentation of divorces, death, arguments or other tragic matters that happen with great frequency in every family life. &#38;nbsp;
With this detailed documentation of various family lives I aim to find keys of unity, elements of synchronicity.Witnessing such recurrences I question the use of photography and the spontaneity with which we choose to document our life.There seems to be a systematization of the photographic process and one can wonder 
if we document our lives for ourselves or for the others.
The exact same poses, settings, events are found again and again and one can wonder how staged our memories are.
On a worldwide scale these past years have seemed to tear us apart, and we appear more and more divided despite technological efforts trying to bring us closer. With borders as statements, and in a global context of human chaos and social division, we need more than ever, to hang on to the things uniting us over the ones that divide us.


These photos assembled together gather families that never met, coming from different eras and continents. This somewhat chaotic memory puzzle reveals strong similarities in these people’s lives, and underneath the rough aspect of the assembly, appears the soft story of a universal bond.

Rassemblant des gros plans d’images collectées au fil des ans et à divers endroits, ce projet met en lumière
l’aspect universel de la mémoire familiale. Des familles issues de différents pays, classes sociales,
générations, se retrouvent dans cette collection d’images. 
Parcourant plusieurs milliers de photographies, presque toute de dimension standard 10x15 cm, j’ai commencé à repérer et isoler des gestuelles récurrentes. Avec plus de trois cent gros plans réalisés,
ce projet est un étalage à grande échelle de démonstration d’affection.  Mis en lumière, ces petits détails presque imperceptible de prime abord sont révélés comme des
expressions visibles d’amour, tendresse, et intimité. Le language corporel de personnes entourées de leurs êtres chers.  M’attardant sur les couleurs, formes et textures, je révèle un autre aspect de l’image, scannée en haute
résolution: sa condition. Parfois rayées, fendues ou affadies par la lumière, ces images portent la trace du
temps, tout en livrant une histoire intemporelle. L’image ressemble peu à peu à un tableau, duquel la peinture commence à s’écailler illustrant l’effacement
possible de la mémoire, à une échelle individuelle ou collective.  
Hors de leur contextes, ces moments figés dans le temps sont transcendés au lieu d’être oubliés. Ils ne font plus partie d’un contexte plus large, ils sont devenus l’image elle-même. Ces vestiges visuels, éléments négligés, sous-estimés de l’image sont désormais mis en avant
et arborent un nouveau rôle. 
Dans la continuité de mes recherches sur une documentation de la mémoire et la visualisation de la trace du temps,ce projet s’aligne avec le reste de ma pratique, qui par l’usage systématique de photographie d’archive,
questionne aussi le droit d’auteur.

Gathering close-up of images found over the years and in various locations, this work highlights the universal aspect of family memory. 
Families from different countries, social classes, religions are brought together in this visual puzzle. Going trough thousands of family photos, almost all initially printed in standard 10x15cm format, I started to spot and isolate gestures that seemed to be recurring. These hundreds of selected close up are nothing else than a wide collection of affection’s display. A sort of visual encyclopedia of PDA if you will. 
Now put into light, these little details almost unnoticeable at first, are revealed as expression of love, tenderness and comfort. The discreet body language of people surrounded by their loved ones. Looking at colors, shapes and textures, these close up scanned in high resolution reveal another aspect of the picture, its condition. Sometimes scratched, ripped or faded by the light, the images carry the history of time, though illustrating a timeless story. The image start to resemble a painting from which the paint starts to chip, illustrating the possible fading of the memory, on an individual or collective level. Obsessed with the idea of a documentation of memory and the visualization of the trace of time, this project aligns with the rest of my practice, which by the systematical use of photographic archive, also questions authorship.
